Day of the Dead Candy & Sugar Skull Cake How To

Fright and delight with a candy cake!

This ghoulishly good cake is a colorful addition to the altar! A skull cake pan makes the baking easy so you can have more time for the fun part: decorating! Use icing and candy to create sugar skull decorations, then display your macabre masterpiece on a platter of Sixlets®.

How-To

Ingredients:

  • Favorite cake recipe or mix (4 1/2 cups batter used)
  • White Ready-To-Use Decorator Icing
  • Orange Icing Color
  • Golden Yellow Icing Color
  • Rose Icing Color
  • Black, Blue, and Red Sixlets®
  • Red gumballs

Supplies:

  • Tube Skull Pan
  • Cooling grid
  • Cake plate
  • 9 in. Angled Spatula
  • 12 in. Disposable Decorating Bags
  • Standard Coupler
  • Tip Set (tip 5 used; four needed)

1) Make and Ice Cake

Prepare batter. Bake and cool cake. Position on plate. Ice inside of facial features, cake sides and top smooth in white icing.

2) Decorate Scrolls, Dots and Flower

Tint 1/4 cup icing orange, 1/4 cup rose and 1/4 cup yellow. Use tip 5, cut disposable decorating bags and orange and rose icings to pipe scrolls and dots on cake top. Use tip 5, decorating bag and yellow icing to pipe bead flower. Use rose icing to pipe a dot in the center of the flower.

3) Decorate Features with Candy

Fill eyes and nose with black Sixlets®. Position red gumballs on eyes.

4) Decorate Bottom Border

Use tip 5 and white icing to pipe outline bottom border. Position black Sixlets® on piped border.

5) Decorate Eyes and Mouth

Position blue Sixlets® around eyes and red Sixlets® around mouth.
