Ingredients:

  • Pre-made pie crust dough
  • 4 to 6 pounds of your favorite apple variety (Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, etc.)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pre-made pie crust dough
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large egg white

Supplies:

  • 8-inch pie pan
  • Fondant cutter

1) Peel apples

Peel apples and carve out the core. Slice apples into roughly a 1/4-inch thickness. Place apples in a bowl. Add sugar and lemon juice. Toss apples in the bowl until they’re fully coated with sugar and lemon juice. Add flour, salt and cinnamon to the apples. Continue to toss apples until they’re fully covered in flour mixture.

2) Roll out pie crust dough

Split pre-made pie crust dough into two equal portions. Select one pie crust dough portion and roll out to a roughly 12-inch diameter. Line the bottom and the edges of an 8-inch pie pan with the dough. Trim excess dough off the pie pan rim. Place apple filling into pie pan, and dot the top of the apple filling with pieces of butter.

3) Cut pie crust dough into strips

Roll out remaining pie crust dough into a 12-inch diameter. Cut dough into 1/2-inch strips using a fondant cutter.

4) Create pie crust design

Lay strips of pie crust dough across the pie filling in a slight zigzag alignment. Ensure that the adjacent dough strips mirror each other to create a diamond-shaped opening.

5) Crimp edges

Trim excess pastry dough off the edges. Crimp together the edges of the bottom and top layers, sealing the perimeter.

6) Shine pastry crust

Create a shiny pie crust surface by brushing egg white wash (beaten egg white with a teaspoon of water) on top of apple pie crust. If desired, sprinkle additional sugar on top.

7) Bake pie

Bake pie in a preheated oven set to 425 degrees F. After 30 minutes, reduce oven temperature to 375 degrees F and bake for an additional 30 minutes or until the pie crust turns golden brown.

8) Cool down pie

Cool down pie for 1 hour before serving.
