1) Prepare cake rounds

To prepare your cake rounds to be covered with fondant, ice them with a layer of buttercream icing.

2) Prepare bottom tier

To create blue-hued fondant for the bottom layer, knead a ball of white fondant until soft. Using a toothpick, dot blue icing color onto the fondant, and knead until the color is evenly distributed.

3) Knead fondant

To create the half white, half red fondant for the top layer, knead a ball of white fondant until soft. Using a toothpick, dot in red icing color and knead until evenly distributed. Roll a second ball of white fondant.

4) Roll out fondant

Roll out the blue fondant. Place over the larger cake round and smooth using a fondant smoother. Trim off the excess with a pizza cutter or paring knife. Roll out the red fondant and place over the smaller cake. Use the pizza cutter or paring knife to trim the excess red fondant. It should cut off in the middle of the cake. Roll out a long strip of white fondant to cover the lower half of the smaller cake. Trim as necessary. Don't worry if the seam between red and white isn't perfect; it's going to be covered up in step 6.

5) Stack cakes

Place the smaller cake on the larger cake.

6) Make poke ball line

To make the poke ball line, knead a small ball of fondant and use a toothpick to apply black icing color. Knead the black in until evenly distributed. Roll out a strip of black and use it to cover the seam between red and white. Use buttercream icing as adhesive if necessary. Use a ruler and the paring knife or pizza roller to trim the edges of the line before it's applied to the cake.

7) Create poke ball circles

Roll out remaining black fondant. Pick four different fondant cutter sizes. Use the second-to-smallest cookie cutter to cut out a black circle. Re-roll the fondant (and add more if needed) and cut out a black circle using the largest cookie cutter. Roll out white fondant and cut out two circles using the smallest and second-to-largest circle. Use a small layer of buttercream icing to layer the circles, largest to smallest, over the black line.

8) Add the lightning bolts!

Next knead a ball of white fondant and use the toothpick method to add lemon yellow icing color. Knead until evenly distributed. Using the paring knife or pizza cutter, freehand two opposing lightning bolts and adhere them to the bottom cake with buttercream icing.

9) Place gumballs

Create a ring around the bottom of the cake with red, yellow, and white gumballs, in that order, using buttercream icing as adhesive.

10) Place birthday candles

Finish off the cake with Pokemon candles. Now sit back and admire your masterpiece!
