A luau without patio lights is like a luau without food — it's simply unthinkable, especially when a summer party lasts into the night.
Set the scene with island-themed outdoor string lights (which work equally well indoors) — lighting strands with mini bulbs in plastic casings shaped like Tiki idols, plumeria flowers, flip flops, and even beer cups, or fabric casings shaped like lanterns.
Hang the string lights indoors or outdoors; because they stand up to weather, you can wrap them around tree limbs, drape them along the wall and across the eaves of your patio, lay them decoratively on the garden shrubbery, and of course tack them along the table skirt of your Tiki bar.
Globe string lights, with their large round bulbs strung close together, are a spectacular all-purpose decoration for large areas; for outdoor table settings, nothing beats the romantic atmosphere of umbrella lights, while margarita lights, flip flop lights, and Tiki lights introduce an element of island novelty.
All patio lights are UL rated, use standard 120V AC current, and are fitted with end-to-end plugs, allowing you to connect several strings together.
Bulbs are replaceable, and most string lights come with extra bulbs and fuses, saving you a possible trip to the hardware store.
In the rare event that bulbs do burn out, other bulbs in the light string will continue to glow — and guests will hardly notice the difference.
