History

Party City is celebrating its 25th Birthday! Party City opened its first store in East Hanover, NJ in 1986 with the goal of creating a one-stop party supply shop that helps anyone hosting a party do so with ease. After two years of operation, Party City began sharing its successful business model with entrepreneurs and opened its first franchise store in Hazlet, NJ in 1989. Party City ventured outside the Northeast in 1992 and opened stores in Georgia and Tennessee. Quickly thereafter, Party City became a nationwide chain with store locations ranging from Hawaii to Puerto Rico.

Between 2005 and 2007, Party City experienced several company milestones that transformed the retailer into a true industry leader. In 2005, the company was acquired by Amscan Holdings, Inc., effectively combining the largest retailer of party goods with the leading designer, manufacturer and distributor of party supplies, as well as the world’s largest manufacturer of foil balloons. 

The incredible synergy between Amscan and Party City enabled the retailer to tailor its broad merchandise offerings and provide an incredible assortment of seasonal and everyday party supplies. With the acquisition of Party America in 2006 and Factory Card and Party Outlet in 2007, Party City became the largest party goods retailer in America.

Recently, Party City has made substantial investments to enhance the customer’s in-store experience and become the ultimate retail destination. Stores now showcase dynamic balloon counters displaying hundreds of balloons to match any licensed character or occasion. Additionally, store-within-a-store concepts for sports, candy and party favors are focal points in all new stores.
