How-To

Chalkboard Cookies Idea How To
Ingredients:
  • 1 16-oz package of powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup warm water
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 tbsps. meringue powder
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • Black icing color
Supplies:
  • Star shaped cookie cutter
  • Squeeze bottle
  • Decorating bag, coupler and round tip
  • Bright White Candy Melts®
  • Tray and red Sixlets®, for displaying
Follow Instructions
1) Make cookies
Use a star shaped cookie cutter to shape and bake your favorite sugar cookie recipe.
2) Mix icing
In a large bowl, mix all ingredients except icing color with an electric mixer on low speed. Once combined, beat on high speed until very stiff, about 7-10 minutes. Mix in a little color at a time until it reaches desired shade.
3) Outline cookies
Fill a decorating bag with icing and outline the star shape for your cookie with a round tip. Let dry until hardened, about 30-60 minutes.
4) Flood cookies with icing
Thin remaining icing, one teaspoon of water at a time, to a creamy consistency. Pour this into a squeeze bottle. Once your border is set, squeeze the thinned icing to fill in the outline. Use a metal spatula to smooth air bubbles or gaps. Let harden completely.
5) Write on cookies
Cut Bright White Candy Melts® in half and use the pointed edge to write on your cookies. We chose short celebratory phrases like “you did it!”, but you could also write your grad’s name or graduation year! Display on a tray covered in red Sixlets®.
