Follow Instructions
1) Prepare cake
Stack the two 6 in. cake rounds on top of each other with a thin layer of buttercream icing between layers. Repeat with the two 9 in. cake rounds. To prepare both sets of cake rounds to be covered with fondant, ice them with a layer of buttercream icing.
2) Cover with fondant
To create bottom tier, knead about 24 oz. white fondant, then roll out fondant to about 13 in. round. Lay fondant over side of cake and smooth top and sides. Remove excess fondant from bottom with paring knife and reserve for step 5. To create the blue effect, lightly spray the fondant-covered cake with blue Color Mist.
3) Make the castle
Tint 24 oz white fondant with dots of black icing color to make grey; set aside 6 oz of the grey fondant. To create the top tier, roll out the 18 oz. ball of grey fondant to about 13 in. round. Lay over the cake and smooth top and sides. Remove excess fondant from bottom with paring knife. Lightly score the fondant-covered cake with a paring knife or toothpick to create a castle-wall effect. Roll out the scraps of grey fondant and cut three 4 in.-long strips, then arrange them around the cake like "columns." Cut out small squares and arrange around the top lip of the cake to look like castle stones. Place the smaller cake on the larger cake on top of a cake board.
4) Add a pebble border
Using the 6 oz. of grey fondant you set aside earlier, form around 60 3/8 in. round "pebbles." With buttercream icing in a disposable icing bag and tip #3, place small dots of icing around the bottom tier of the cake, adding fondant pebbles as you go.
5) Create the elemental symbols
To make the elemental Skylanders symbols, roll out the different colors of fondant from the multicolor pack and cut out around five or six 2 in. circles. Since you will not be able to fit all the Skylanders symbols on the cake, pick a few of the birthday star's favorites and cut them out freehand from the scraps of white fondant you saved from earlier. Using buttercream icing, attach the white elements to the round circles you cut out, then arrange them around the bottom tier of the cake. Add the finishing touch with Skylanders birthday candles and serve up your mighty creation on matching Skylanders tableware!
