Follow Instructions
1) Ice cakes
To prepare your cake rounds for the fondant, ice them with a layer of buttercream icing.
2) Cover top tier
Roll out the yellow fondant and cover the 6 in. cake, trimming off the excess with a pizza cutter or paring knife.
3) Create treasure map
Work some pirate magic and create a treasure map with brown fondant! Use a 10 in.x6 in. section of pre-rolled white fondant and use a toothpick to dot brown icing color onto it. Knead until color is evenly distributed. Roll out the brown fondant and cut into a rectangle, slightly slicing and rippling the edges to create a distressed effect. Draw black lines for the map with an edible food marker.
4) Finish treasure map
Roll out the red fondant and cut 1 in. thick strips. Use two short strips to make an "X" for the treasure map. Very cool!
5) Cover middle tier
Roll out white fondant to cover the 10 in. cake. Trim off the excess with a pizza cutter or paring knife. Dab your red fondant strips with water and apply to this cake tier.
6) Create eye patch
Shiver me timbers, time for the eye patch! Color white fondant black and knead until soft, and then roll out and cut a semicircle with a paring knife. To make the black string, roll some black fondant between your hands with a rubbing motion. Apply eye patch to cake using water as "glue."
7) Dye fondant
Arrr-right, let's make some waves! To create the fondant "waves," use white fondant. Knead until soft and divide into three portions. To get three different shades of blue, dot the portions with increasing amounts of sky blue icing color and knead until mixed.
8) Cover bottom tier
Roll out all the blue fondant, use a paring knife or pizza cutter to create wave curves on the top edge of the fondant. The lightest blue layer should be a little taller than the cake (ours was 4 1/2 in.). The medium blue layer will be about 2 in. shorter, and the third dark blue layer will be the shortest. Apply the waves to the 12 in. cake using water.
9) Assemble cakes
Stack the cakes and use buttercream icing to secure the white, black and red Sixlets® at the bases of the top two layers.
10) Attach sand
To make the sand, first brush light corn syrup 1/2 in. up the base of the cake and 1/2 in. on the cake plate. Then use fingers to firmly pack the brown sugar onto the corn syrup.
11) Finish the look
Decorate your booty-ful work with Jake and the Never Land Pirates candles and chocolate coins. Use the same brown sugar sand technique to decorate the bases of the candles. Create a treasure chest from brown and yellow fondant and scatter on some coins for a cake worth its weight in gold doubloons!
